Photography Education for Youth and Community Organizations

I customize each workshop to cover topics such as basic photo skills, creative image-making, self expression through photography, and how to use photography to effect social change. Conducted between 2 hours to a full day, students get hands-on experience in the art of photo-making, as well as learn how to articulate their creative process in a group critique. These workshops can take place on location, in community spaces like libraries and recreation centers, or as walkthroughs in cities and urban areas. I work with clients of all budgets and sizes, including arts organizations, school districts, arts education groups, and other cultural institutions. Each workshop can be tailored as a series, a part of a larger curriculum, or as a single-day event.

Online Education and Workshops

I conduct online workshops with groups and individuals. Similar to in person workshops, these sessions teach the subjects of photography skills, storytelling through photos and writing and visual storytelling in the service of advocating for people and communities. Given that this work is remote I can work with communities and organizations throughout the country.

Photography Workshops with Schools and School Districts

Over the years I have worked in many classrooms to teach students photography skills as well as how to use photography as a tool for self expression and self development. Often in these classes, we touch upon larger subjects such as social justice, mental health, economic disparity, and environmental issues. I consult with instructors to ensure that the work I do is in line with their curriculum or their initiatives for the classroom. I also help educators to design engaging art and photography modules to use in their classrooms.

I work with clients including school districts, charter schools, and alternative education programs. Lessons include: basic photo skills, lighting, digital file editing and processing as well as art and aesthetic concepts.

Speaking Engagements

I am often asked to give lectures or speak on subjects like art in education, creative placemaking in rural communities, photography as an agent of change, and diversity and representation in media. I do both virtual and in-person presentations about my practice and projects for colleges, universities, education conferences, cultural institutions and museums. Contact me if you would like me to speak at your upcoming event.
